Festival season is well and truly upon us, and few things compare to spending time with family and friends and listening to your favourite artists. However, sleep isn’t always easy to come by. A combination of adrenaline, excitement and noise often paves the way for a disrupted night’s rest.

In our blog, we explore why sleep and festival season don’t always go hand in hand and how you can achieve a better night’s sleep whilst still making memories.

Sleeping At Festivals – Is It Possible To Achieve A Good Night’s Rest?

So, why is it so hard to sleep well at festivals?

The obvious reason for a lack of sleep at festivals is noise. Being surrounded by other campers who are out partying until the early hours of the morning, when you’re ready for sleep, isn’t ideal.

Another factor at play is alcohol, which is common among festival-goers. Whilst it’s reported that alcohol helps you fall asleep faster, ‘those effects quickly wear away after just a few hours as your body tries to eliminate the alcohol from your system.’. The National Sleep Foundation explains this in greater detail, stating that ‘production of adenosine (a chemical in the brain that acts as a sleep-inducer) increases while drinking, allowing you to go to sleep quickly — however, this chemical quickly subsides, making you more likely to wake up throughout the night.’. Why is sleep important?

Even though sleep isn’t likely your top priority at a festival, it’s vital for maintaining good mental and physical health. Specifically, a good night’s sleep is ‘an essential function that allows your body and mind to recharge, leaving you refreshed and alert when you wake up.’ This is particularly useful while camping, where your surroundings are unfamiliar and you’re likely to have a busy schedule in place.

What can I do to sleep better?

Ear plugs & face masks

Arguably the best hack to combat noise is investing in a pair of earplugs, hopefully ensuring an undisturbed night’s rest. Similarly, consider an eye mask in order to keep the early morning sunrise at bay and enjoy a well-needed lie in.

In truth, it’s challenging to block out the inevitable noise, and with this in mind, it may be worthwhile to catch up on some much-needed shut-eye during the day when it’s quiet or your favourite artist has yet to play.

Create a cosy sleep environment

Alternatively, consider creating a cosy and comfortable sleep environment with the hope of being too comfortable at nighttime to feel the impact of outside noise. Extra duvets and pillows go a long way to comprising the ideal environment.
