Sometimes, you become used to compromised comfort and support and don’t realise it’s time to upgrade your mattress. In other instances, you may be counting down the days—well, nights in this case—until your new mattress arrives. Our latest blog focuses on memory foam mattresses and how you can identify whether it’s time for a new bed.

So, what are the telltale signs?

1. Sagging and indentations

To state the obvious, it’s important that the foam layers remain in optimal condition to provide the appropriate support and comfort. If your mattress has visible dips or indentations that don’t bounce back after you get out of bed, this is a clear sign that the foam has lost its resilience and support.

2. Loss of support and comfort

If you notice that your mattress is no longer providing the support and comfort it once did, this is perhaps the clearest indicator that it’s time to upgrade. If you’re experiencing back pain that wasn’t there before, you may need a more supportive mattress.

3. Frequent movement through the night

If tossing and turning in order to find a comfortable spot has become an all-too-regular occurrence, this is your sign to shop for a new mattress. Your mattress may not be contouring your body as effectively as it once did, which makes the memory foam redundant.

4. Feeling hot when you wake up

As we’ve discussed in other blogs, memory foam is recognised for its heat retention properties. However, if you consistently wake up feeling hot, this could be a sign that the foam has lost its cooling properties.

5. You’ve noticed you are sleeping better elsewhere

This is significant if you’ve recently stayed in hotels or guest rooms at a friend’s or family member’s and slept noticeably better. It’s important to remember that at one point in time, your memory foam mattress was the comfiest bed in the world!

6. Unpleasant odours

Memory foam mattresses can develop persistent odours over time due to trapped sweat, body oils, and bacteria that are hard to eliminate.

7. Visible damage

Any rips, stains or visible damage that could compromise the quality of your mattress signals that an upgrade is due.

8. It’s more than 7-10 years old

Memory foam mattresses have a life expectancy of between 6 and 10 years, possibly longer, depending on the model. When you reach this milestone, it may be the right time to assess your mattress.
