How do I find the best mattress protector?

Finding the perfect mattress protector for you depends on a variety of factors. Read the reasons below on 'why use a mattress protector?'. You can discover the most critical aspects for you and your sleeping environment.

Why use a mattress protector?

There are multiple reasons why using mattress protectors is not only beneficial, but essential. Here, we highlight the necessity of a mattress cover or protector.

Protects your mattress (and its guarantee or warranty!)

Firstly, a mattress protector will shield your bed from stains or spillages. The guarantee and warranty will become void if your mattress becomes stained or marked. Therefore, if your mattress develops a manufacturing fault, you will not be able to claim. Your mattress is an investment, so it makes sense to protect it from marks and keep it in tip-top shape for this reason alone.

Improves sleep hygiene

It's normal to sweat throughout the night; that's something we simply can't get away from. Without a mattress protector, sweat can seep through your mattress over time. This can stain your bed over time, as well as cause odours. No one wants this where they sleep every night!

Prevents the build-up of allergens

Are you allergic to dust mites? If so, a mattress protector can help keep your allergy symptoms at bay. Dust mites feed off dead skin, and because we shed up to 10g a week, our mattresses provide an abundance of food for them. When we use mattress protectors (and regularly clean them), we prevent the build-up of these allergens in our mattresses. Compared to someone without a mattress protector, there could be anywhere between hundreds of thousands to millions of allergens in their mattress.

Enhances comfort

Depending on the mattress protector you choose, they can provide an extra comfort layer to your bed. Who doesn't want their bed to be comfier?

Waterproof mattress protectors

Worried about accidentally spilling a drink? Or do you have a child that is going through a phase of nighttime accidents? A waterproof mattress protector will keep these worries at bay, as the mattress and its fillings will be held in pristine condition. Whilst most mattress protectors will offer sufficient protection against spillages, the best waterproof mattress protectors will allow for greater protection. The majority of our range features waterproof properties, therefore whether it's a single, king size waterproof mattress protector or anything in-between, we're sure to feature something for your bed.

What are mattress protectors made from?

Similar to a fitted sheet, a mattress protector is a thin layer that covers the entire mattress surface for optimal protection. Mattress protectors are made from a range of materials depending on what qualities they offer. A cotton mattress protector offers breathability but the least protection, especially in comparison to those that combine cotton and polyester. Such anti-allergy mattress protectors are more effective in preventing the build-up of allergens because their fibres are much tighter. This makes it hard for dust mites to pass through. On top of this, we also offer cooling mattress protectors made from bamboo. Bamboo's moisture-wicking and breathable properties help you keep cool at night. Bamboo's moisture-wicking and breathable properties help you keep cool at night, meaning a cooling mattress protector is ideal for anyone who sleeps hot.

Can I use an electric blanket with a mattress protector?

The answer to this depends on what type of mattress you have. Suppose you have a memory foam or a hybrid mattress with a memory foam top layer. In that case, you should not use an electric blanket. This is because the extra heat from the electric blanket can cause the memory foam to soften or damage the level of support it can provide. Even if you place the electric blanket between the mattress protector and your bed sheet, it can still cause damage.

However, if you have a different mattress without memory foam, you can place the electric blanket underneath the mattress protector and sheet with nothing to worry about.

Alternatives to mattress protectors

Mattress toppers

If you're looking for something that can add sink-in comfort to your current sleeping solution, memory foam mattress toppers are a brilliant option. You can benefit from the support of your mattress, but the mattress topper can supply body-moulding comfort on top of this. However, as we explained above, we still recommend using a mattress protector with a mattress topper.
